Super Cool or Super Lame? How People Use Facebook

OK, first, I need to thank the super cool Australian web hosting and small business guys at Crucial. I’ve hacked up their infographic on less common uses of Facebook for this Facebook marketing article.
Facebook is one of the more outstanding and controversial marketing and social media platforms to be built since the web began. It attracts all kinds of people from all over the world – for all kinds of reasons.
Web marketers love it and hate it. Mum’s love what it does for them, but hate what it can do to their kids. Dad’s are largely indifferent and families find it a great way to keep in touch.
But it’s always been a mixed bag in terms of just how useful and productive it is to our lives. Facebook is like the Book of Psalms. It covers every conceivable mood and circumstance in life.
From insufferable nonsense like this:

To amazing and worthwhile stuff like this:
How Facebook can be Useful
Some things that happen on Facebook are Super Cool. But their are plenty of really lame things you can do also.

Which Facebook Uses Below are Super Cool and Which are Super Lame?

1. Work Place Procrastination

I am using my blog this way right now. I should be doing something else.
And, since I am using Facebook as my lever, I guess I am also using Facebook as an excuse for not doing more important things.

2. Doing the Business of State

This should not come as a surprise for the country that believes in Elves, banned beer until 1989 and for whose residents it was illegal to run a marathon in under 3 hours and 30 minutes.
The Constitutional process, while fascinating, was largely a failure since those drafting the document failed to properly include Iceland’s politicians.

3. A Haunt for all our Grubby Little Secrets

It amazes me that so many people sit in front of their computer sharing their dirty laundry as though no one was listening.
The irony is that while Facebook may be a revealer of secrets, it hasn’t made the world a more transparent place. Facebook can also mask a thousand sins..

4. For those who Never can Say Goodbye

Super Cool or Super Lame? #4 ~ Using Facebook to Tail an Ex Lover

Why? Well, see above. Facebook is a place for all our grubby little secrets. On Facebook I can keep an eye on all those women I’ve loved before. The Daily Mail says and why would they lie?) that nearly 90% of jilted lovers are spying on their ex on social media site.
It’s voyeurism. It’s also pretty anti-social and depressing.

5. Nothing like a Social Network to Shield us

Many would call this cowardly. Not me. I call this gutless. If your next boyfriend ever brags that the has done this in a past relationship, leave. I am digging in on the guys here – you know who you are.
It’s not that girls don’t do this, they do. But, I am a guy, and the only other people apart from the girls who are allowed to berate the guys over this kind of thing are, well, other guys.

6. Because we Were all Wondering

Super Cool or Super Lame? #6 ~ Using Facebook events to make yourself look busy

Nigel no friends. 35% is a fairly large number of people updating their status so everyone else on Facebook will think they are otherwise engaged.
Most people are inclined to take the phone of the hook when they are busy. not the Net Generation. We down tools to tell everyone how busy we (pretend) are.

7. User Buying Decisions

Finally, something remotely useful. Listening to the reviews and opinions of your peers so you know what’s hip, what’s groovy, what’s now.
Envy runs deep and there is nothing like a bit of social pressure to get you in to that new frock your skinny sister form across the Atlantic is bragging about online.
Well, that’s the list, but let me leave you with a really cool trick you can try on your next Facebook status post.
If you type your Facebook password in to a status update and hit publish, it converts the message in to an asterisk string.
